What are the benefits of Social and Therapeutic Horticulture?
A different approach to learning in a fun and social way!
- Social and therapeutic horticulture (STH) involves the use of plants and gardening to obtain and improve the skill set of people of all ages and abilities.
- It has been proven that therapeutic horticulture can improve the self-esteem and self-confidence of an individual (Thrive 2019).
- STH not only develops social skills but can also improve literacy, numeracy skills and the general well-being in this case of a child.
- Children get an appreciation for nature and the environment.
- Children learn where their food comes from!
This is our standard activity but if you have a special request we can tailor a programme to suit your requirements.
The Results!
After caring for and waiting for! (encourages patience)
- The pupils can take their broad bean plant home to show their families their achievement in growing and nurturing their plants
to maturity. - A simple potting exercise rewards the pupils with social and therapeutic skills, gives ownership and creates a sense of inclusion for pupils of all abilities.
- A certificate of completion is presented to every pupil that has grown a plant in the programme.
This is our standard activity but if you have a special request we can tailor a programme to suit your requirements.
